I am a 27 year old female (with a college degree) and I dream of being a FBI criminal investigator. What do I have to do in order to make my dream come true? What steps must I take? Where in the world do I begin? I have been all over fbi.gov and I want to know more. Please serious answers only.
If you have gone to FBI website, then make an appointment with your local FBI office and see if you can talk to a live special agent, and get it from the horse’s mouth.
u “ll have to take some more classes,u can go on line n find out the requirements or contact ur local fbi dept.
You apply, that is basicly where you will start. You did not say what degree you have, or other things, degrees they are really hot about now are computer, accounting with CPA, and attorneys ( law degree). Also those with college degrees that have military experience.
Most federal criminal investigators get hired with previous service in law enforcement and/or the military. This is not to say that they don’t have all kinds of other academic and professional qualifications… it just says that those experiences plus this type of prior service would likely rate you most competitive. The days of the FBI being filled with law school grads are long gone… and I wouldn’t bet on being hired on “computer skills” or “language proficiency” alone.
I would suggest joining a smaller agency or the military and treat your FBI application as a “promotion” instead of a career change… you’ll develop more job related skills that way too.
Plus… if your goal is to become an FBI agent then I’ll bet you would be much more comfortable spending a career in local law enforcement or in the Air Force – as opposed to accounting or corporate management, etc. – if you never get a call back with the feds.
Also… start researching ALL of the federal law enforcement agencies (and even non-law enforcement federal agencies) that hire criminal investigators. You might find that your specific interests lie outside of the FBI.
Good luck.
First of all, you need at least a Bachelors degree that is pertinent to the job you are looking at; Criminology, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, etc.. Also, they will only look at your application if you have some type of law enforcement experience recommended 3 years or greater. The application will specify that requirement.
Start by finding out the requirements for the particular position you want. There are many different types of criminal investigators.
Second, work on getting your Bachelors in one of the fields I listed above. Some colleges offer online courses. Mountain State University is one I am familiar with. They have an 18 month program for a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and it is entirely online.
Third, try to get on with a local department. Sheriff or City Police. Work on your physical training so that if you are selected, you will have an easier time in the academy.
